Marit Bjorgen is keeping the results to herself, but recent tests make her confident that the changes in her training have positive effects.

Marit Bjorgen is where she should be fitness-wise. Last week she did tests, conducted by professor Jan Helgerud at the University of Trondheim, Norway, as part of her training under her old coach Svein Tore Samdal. The test protocol is mainly following the same model as what she used until the start of the 2005/2006-season.

We are testing running on the treadmill, and rollerskiing both classic and skating. This way we can measure how the training in the previous period has worked and get answers to where I have most to gain in the training in the upcoming period, says Marit Bjorgen. She has mostly been training at home this summer and is very satisfied with what she has done for training lately.

What are the test results telling you about how you are doing at this point?

- I don’t want to say anything specifically regarding my VO2Max and other numbers. It results in speculation. But I can say that we have conducted two tests – in May and last week – and the results show that I’m where I feel I need to be. The next test will be in August, says Marit Bjorgen.

Training less

Last season was done without systematic testing. It was therefore hard to detect if something was wrong in her training.

- The biggest change in the training toward next season is that I’m training less, but with blocks of more hard training. This is done to gain more recovery and to have better quality at this time and toward the start of the season. I’m training fewer hours than what I did in the 2004-2005 season, but I have a good foundation to build on, says Marit Bjorgen
